[00:00] Josh
We don’t change by just trying to change our actions. We have to change the way that we believe. We have to believe higher—about ourselves, about God, about the people in our lives, and about our circumstances.
When we believe higher, it shows up in our actions. It shows up in our emotions. And I think emotions are one of the key indicators of what we’re really believing. Because it’s easy to know the truth—but head knowledge doesn’t always impact your heart. It's gotta make the journey from your head to your heart.
[01:12] Corina
Welcome friends! We’re so excited to be here with you again on this episode of Believe and Become. Today, we're talking about why beliefs are important. This is such a huge topic for us—obviously, with our title, Believe and Become.
We strongly believe that your thoughts and your beliefs are different. We’ve talked about being transformed by the renewing of your mind and how to change your thoughts—but how does that affect your beliefs? And how do your beliefs affect everything else?
[02:28] Josh
Our beliefs affect everything we do and feel. What we’ve learned through our own transformation journey is that beliefs are the most important thing.
We advance in the Kingdom the same way we entered it—by faith, by belief. But so often, we shift from believing to striving. We try to fix ourselves through behavior modification, and that just doesn’t work.
[04:05] Corina
Exactly. I remember a moment I had with God when I was struggling with finances. I said, “Yes God, I trust You… but—” and He stopped me right there and said, “If there’s a but, that means you don’t trust Me.”
I realized I had head knowledge about God being my provider, but in my heart, I wasn’t living like I trusted Him.
[06:15] Josh
That’s such a good point—our emotions can reveal what we’re really believing. If you’re panicking or stressed, there’s often a false belief at the root of it.
[07:20] Corina
Right. A lot of times, we’re responding from old, trained patterns. Maybe we believe we’re not worthy of love, or that people are out to hurt us, when in reality, they aren’t even thinking about us that way.
[08:50] Josh
If you want a new emotion, check your beliefs. Ask yourself, “What am I believing about God? About myself? About this person?” Your beliefs create the lens through which you experience life.
[10:00] Corina
Two of the most important beliefs you can have are:
What do I believe about God?
What do I believe about myself?
Do I believe He’s kind, trustworthy, faithful? Do I believe I’m a loved daughter or son? Am I living like that’s true?
[12:00] Josh
One of my favorite quotes is: “You can’t consistently do something you don’t believe you are.”
I remember when God told me, “You are my son in whom I am well pleased.” Just like He said to Jesus before His ministry even started. That truth changed everything. I didn’t have to earn His approval—I already had it.
[14:20] Corina
Yes! When we live from sonship instead of striving, we stop trying to prove ourselves. That’s when real ministry and motherhood and work become life-giving, not draining.
[16:00] Josh
Once I started believing who I was, I stopped striving. Ministry wasn’t exhausting anymore. I had energy because I was working with God, not just for Him. His Spirit was empowering me.
[18:30] Corina
It’s like Jesus said: “My food is to do the will of my Father.” When we live from our calling—knowing we’re loved and chosen—we feel fed and full, even when the work is hard.
[20:10] Josh
But if we believe we’re just sinners trying not to sin, we’re going to keep sinning by faith. Like Chris Vallotton says, “If you believe you’re a sinner, you’ll sin by faith.”
[21:15] Corina
We can’t live free while believing we’re still stuck. The truth is—we are the righteousness of Christ. We’re new creations. That’s the belief that unlocks freedom.
[23:00] Josh
And 1 John 4:17 says, “As He is, so are we in this world.” That’s Jesus—resurrected, victorious. That’s who we are in Him!
[24:05] Corina
It’s easy to have good doctrine but bad beliefs. Steve Backlund says that all the time. We might know the truth intellectually, but if it hasn’t impacted our heart and emotions, it’s not producing transformation.
[25:30] Josh
When you’re feeling anxious or reactive, ask God: “What’s the lie I’m believing right now? What’s the truth You want me to believe instead?”
[26:10] Corina
Exactly. We say it all the time: “Where’s the lie?” Ask God, identify it, and then replace it with His truth. That’s how we renew our minds—through Scripture, declarations, and meditation.
[27:15] Josh
And that process is spiritual warfare. It’s not always about shouting or rebuking the enemy. It’s taking thoughts captive and making them obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).
[28:00] Corina
So, if you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or condemned—it might be time to check your beliefs. God is ready to bring transformation. And He’ll do it through truth that sets you free.
