Show Notes

Have you ever wondered why you can read your Bible, pray, go to church, and do all the “right” things...but still feel stuck in the same patterns?

In this episode, Josh and Corina talk about why knowing God’s Word isn’t the same as believing it or applying it, and how real transformation happens when truth moves from your head to your heart. Corina shares honestly about seasons when she knew what God wanted for her but still felt trapped in unhealthy patterns, and Josh shares about knowing all the right Scriptures about peace while still struggling with anxiety.

You’ll learn why the goal of Scripture isn’t just information, but transformation, and how to partner with the Holy Spirit so the Word becomes personal, alive, and practical in your everyday life.

They also share practical ways to:

Recognize an area where you feel stuck
Identify the belief underneath it
Ask God what truth applies to your situation
Pray and personalize Scripture
Meditate on God’s Word throughout your day
Take old thoughts captive and replace them with truth
Build simple habits that help the truth become your new normal

You may not need another sermon, book, or Bible study. You may simply need to take the truth God has already spoken and begin to apply it until it becomes part of how you think, believe, and live.

[00:00:00] Speaker A: The Bible is meant to be experienced. God's Word is alive and active, sharper than any two edged sword. And it's the only book where the author shows up when we read it and we get to encounter him. And that's what we need. We need to encounter him in the scripture. That's when the Word comes alive, God shows up in it and it becomes real to us. That's the difference between kind of knowing the truth and experiencing it. And once we experience it and we experience God's presence and his breath breathing on the Word of God, it comes alive. And that is what transforms us. Hey friends, before we jump into today's episode, we want to invite you to something special. Have you ever wondered why you can read your Bible, pray, go to church and do all the right things, but still feel stuck in the same old patterns? Here's the thing. Knowing God's Word isn't the same as applying it. And that's why we've created Transformed by truth. In 30 days starting November 16th for 30 days, I am going to walk you through simple practical ways to renew your mind and let God's Word actually change your life. You'll get short daily teachings, simple challenges to put the truth into practice, and two life Q& A sessions. We'd love for you to join us. Head to joshandkarina.comtransformation to sign up. Welcome to the Believe and Become podcast. Today we are talking about why you can be reading your Bible, praying, going to church and doing all the right things and still feel stuck in the same patterns. I think this is a common problem. I know that we both have really struggled in different areas with this and I remember for what feels like a really long time in my life I struggled with just being in unhealthy romantic relationships. It was probably 10 years of be dating somebody knowing that this was not the person that God had for me or really just this isn't what God has for me right now. But Feeling like I couldn't get out of it. I just felt stuck. I. I would try, I would separate myself, I would do all the things I knew how to do, and somehow I would just end up back there. And it was so frustrating and it made me feel so ashamed because I knew the truth. I knew what God wanted for me, for my life, but I wasn't able to partner with him in that because just felt stuck. I knew that I needed to change. I knew that I wanted to change, but I didn't know how. And that was really hard. It took a lot of prayer and a lot of really finding who I was in Christ and beginning to partner with that reality in order to break free from some of those cycles. And I just think this is something that we all struggle with where there are areas in our lives where we just feel stuck. We just feel like, I want to change, but I don't know how, or I know what to do, but I just can't make myself do it. And so that's what we're going to talk about today because we feel like this is such an important area for many believers who want to move forward in their relationship with Christ. You want to be everything that he made you to be, but sometimes it just feels hard. [00:03:55] Speaker A: Yeah, it can be really frustrating to kind of know that there's, you know, the truth, you know that you should be able to change, but just like not happening in your life and you kind of. That shame does come up where you're like, oh, why doesn't it, why isn't it working for me? You know, you read the Bible and you go, okay, how do I. I just don't have the strength. I don't have the willpower. I don't have whatever it is to just make that happen. That's. There's the truth, but it's not happening in my life. And it also makes me think of kind of self help section of the bookstore or Amazon where there's just like an incredible number of books out there and podcasts and videos and you name it, it's all over. There's. We're all trying to get better. We're all trying to. Somebody's always trying to tell you how to change, how you can do it yourself. Well, we have good news for you. It's not by your own strength, but it's by God's strength and his grace alone that we actually renew our minds and are actually transformed. And that really works. That actually works. Some of that other self help stuff, some of it is Good. Some of it's not. But this, this is God's word. It is the truth. And when we apply it to our lives, we are transformed. [00:05:11] Speaker C: So here's the thing. We know that the Bible says you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. John 8:32 but sometimes just knowing the truth is not the enough to break free. And here's why. Because knowing the truth is not the same as believing it and it's not the same as applying it. And so we can know the Scripture intellectually, we can understand what it means, we can know the context, we can have all of the, you know, Bible tools out and know where Jesus was standing when he said it. And you know, all of these things. We can have a really deep understanding of it in our minds, but not really know the truth in our hearts. And so it's important that we don't just know about Jesus, what he said, what the Word says, but that we experience that as true. For me, what does that truth mean in my life? How does God reveal this truth to me so that it can begin to change my beliefs? It's vital that we understand His Word at heart level, not just at the head level. [00:06:21] Speaker A: The Bible is meant to be experienced. God's Word. Word is alive and active, sharper than any two edged sword. And it's the only book where the author shows up when we read it and we get to encounter him. And that's what we need, we need to encounter him in the Scripture. That's when the Word comes alive, God shows up in it and it becomes real to us. That's the difference between kind of knowing the truth and experiencing it. And once we experience it, and we experience God's presence and his breath breathing on the Word of God, it comes alive. And that is what transforms us. Just like it says, says in Romans 12:2, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. That's allowing the Word to come in and to change the way that we think. We get to reprogram our brains with God's truth. That's where true transformation happens. We have to be renewed in the spirit of our minds, as it says in Ephesians 4. [00:07:14] Speaker C: I would say that the goal of Scripture is not just information, but is transformation. That is God's desire for you. And I think that we have each seen you can know what God's Word says and still not have it showing up in all the areas of your life. There are areas that maybe haven't come into agreement. There are things that you're believing that are holding you back from stepping into the transformation that God has for you. So we want to not just know the truth in our head, but we want to experience it and know it in our heart. It's the only way. [00:07:48] Speaker A: I remember a time in my life where I was really struggling with a lot of anxiety. And I knew all the scriptures. I knew that God had not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and a sound mind. I knew Philippians 4, where it says, do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, present your request to God, and the peace of God will transform your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. I knew and could quote all the Scriptures, but I was still having so much anxiety and so much fear, and it was really frustrating. God, why don't I have your peace? I know the scripture. I know the truth. I should be able to access that peace. Why isn't it true in my life? And we're going to lead you through this process of how we actually get that word, that living word inside of us. So it will transform you from the inside out. And you can have that peace or whatever it is, whatever promise you've read in the scripture that you go, I know that's for me, but it seems so far away. So this real, true transformation, it requires intentionality on our parts. It doesn't just happened by accident, although sometimes God zaps us. We love Zappage. When God says, bang, you're. You're better, you're different, you're changed. And we both experience that. It's incredible when he does that. But so many times it requires intentionality on our part, because God, he has. He knows what's best for us, and he is leading us through the process of getting free. There's so much power in that, because when he just zaps you, that is amazing. And we love it when God moves like that. But sometimes there's the process of. Like, the Israelites went in and took the promised land. They had to clear it out. And there was so much trusting in God and learning that happens in that process that a lot of times that's why he allows us to go through that process. And so. But we have to be intentional in it. And the first thing is that God's word is powerful, but we have to appropriate it. That means that we're going to take hold of it and apply it to our lives personally. So we're not just reading it and going, wow, that's amazing. Zap me, Lord, right? Or whatever it is that we kind of hope happens, or we memorize it and maybe we quote it a bunch. And those are great steps to do. But there's more that God wants to lead us into the truth of his scripture. So here's a few questions that you can ask whenever you're struggling with. Why am I stuck? Okay, the first thing when you're reading Scripture, what does this truth mean for my life? So it's not just far away. It's like, okay, how does that. How do I apply that to me? Ask the Lord. Okay, show me God. What does that mean for my life right now? It's not just some words that were written thousands of years ago, but it's alive and active and can be applied to your life right now, today. And God wants to speak to you through His Word and show you that. The next question to ask is, do my actions and feelings reflect that? I believe the truth of this scripture? So you can actually take inventory. How am I acting? So if we know that God's peace is available to us, but I'm acting crazy and anxious and fearful all the time, and I'm hiding in the corner because I don't want something bad to happen. Okay. My actions aren't lining up with the truth of God's scripture. If you're having crazy feelings, you're like, I should be peaceful, but I don't feel peaceful. Okay, then we know that there's a gap between the truth and what we actually believe. And so we need to be intentional to come into agreement with that truth and make it a core belief, something that is part of us. Allow God to do that. And then the last question to ask is, what would change if I really believe this was true? And so that just gives you a picture of, okay, if I really believed in the supernatural peace of God, like, I know it's true, but if I really believed it in my heart, okay, I would have confidence. I wouldn't be living in fear. I wouldn't have all these crazy emotions. Not that everything's always going to be perfect, but that's going to be my default mode. I'm going to operate out of the peace of God instead of the anxiety of all the what ifs, what could happen. And that then, you know, once that's true, then you know it's become part of you. [00:12:13] Speaker C: Yeah. And this isn't about striving or trying harder. This isn't like trying to. It's. It's. I got a picture of almost like when you're trying to stuff things in a suitcase. You know, and it's like it doesn't fit. That's kind of how it will feel. It could feel sometimes if you're just trying to stuff these scriptures in and. But there's too much other stuff already going on in there. And that's one of the reasons we love to partner with the Lord in this process. That's why we're asking him the questions, what does this mean for me? Show me what this means. Make this scripture come alive in a way that I. I can begin to apply it. And then we partner with that truth. We're not just like, you know, stuffing it in and hoping it. It works. We've got to get rid of the lies that have been planted there so that we can replace them with the truth. And so we want to partner with the Holy Spirit in this process and allow him to move that truth from your head to your heart, not just the words on the page, but something that really moves you, something that you begin to see as this is absolutely true. I know it because God revealed it to me. So it's really the direction we want to go, not just, well, now I know it, so I should change. No, that. That's really not how it works. We have to work through that process of removing the lies and getting rid of the old beliefs. And then we can partner with the Holy Spirit to appropriate the truth of the Word. [00:13:38] Speaker A: And intentionality, just like Corina said, is not about striving. It's not about trying harder, because we can make some progress by just trying really hard. Like, I'm going to try really hard to be peaceful and not think those anxious thoughts. And sometimes that helps a little bit. So we feel like we're making progress. But true, lasting transformation only comes when we encounter God through His word, through his voice speaking the truth to us, so it becomes part of us. It's that encounter that is so important to lasting transformation. [00:14:11] Speaker C: Yeah, maybe this is something that you struggle with. You feel like, I know God's truth, I know the Word, but I am struggling to apply this in a way that actually brings transformation that lasts. I just feel stuck getting back to this place. And I think that's really common. When we try really hard, we're really, you know, white knuckling and doing really good. And then something happens and it blows it all away. Because that's not transformation. That's not the power of the Spirit. That's our strength. We need to partner with Him. And so that's exactly why we created a new challenge for you guys. Transformed by Truth in 30 days. Starting November 16th, we're going to spend 30 days learning how to take the truth you already know and actually apply it. Now it's time to let it change your life. [00:15:33] Speaker A: That is gonna be awesome. We're so excited for that. So the next point we wanna talk about is that truth actually changes us when we practice it. We don't wanna just be knowers of the Word, we wanna be doers of the Word. So one of the ways that we put the Word into practice is renewing our minds with the truth. So what does that look like? We're going to pray the Word. So pick out that scripture that God has shown to you, or maybe you've memorized it, you've known it for so long. [00:16:00] Speaker C: We're [00:16:00] Speaker A: going to pray that we're going to make it personal. Thank you, God, that you have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and a sound mind. Make it personal. Pray that. Put yourself in the scripture. Imagine what does it look like when this is true for me? What does it look like when I operate out of the truth of God's Word and put yourself into it. Put yourself in the middle of that and just pray it so that it becomes part of you. That's also called meditation. Not talking about Eastern meditation where we empty our minds. This is biblical meditation where we're intentionally thinking about God's Word. I love to just read the verse and emphasize a different word in the verse every time. And what do you know? Sometimes a different thing, a different meaning that maybe you hadn't thought of will pop out of that. [00:16:48] Speaker C: And [00:16:48] Speaker A: a lot of times that's the Holy Spirit just highlighting a piece of a verse and saying, oh, this is what I'm trying to teach you as you read this. We're just spending time in it. We're going to mutter it, we're going to say it. Meditation in the Bible talks about. We're actually. We're chewing on the word, we're digesting It. We're chewing it some more. It's kind of sounds gross, but that's the thing. We need to chew on that word till we get all of the nutrients out of it. And guess what? You can't always get all the nutrients out of God's [00:17:17] Speaker C: Word. [00:17:17] Speaker A: There's always more in there. As he opens up his word to you. [00:17:22] Speaker C: I love to. When I pray the Word specifically, I love to invite the Holy Spirit to bring up other verses as I pray it. So even as I'm praying, thank you, God, that you've not given me a spirit of fear, then I can. There's so many verses about don't be afraid that can pop up, you know, that I don't have to be afraid because you're always with me, that you're with me in the fire and the waters and you're, you know, and I can just go through and kind of. It's almost like feasting on the Word where he's just bringing up scripture after scripture, and then I can move on to. But you've given me love. Oh, you're perfect love casts out all fear. I don't have to be afraid because I am in perfect love. And so as I pray, I just invite him to remind me of other scriptures that this brings up. And you could even, as an act of meditation, you could even pull out a concordance and. Or go online and say, give me all the scriptures about fear. Give me all the scriptures about love. And just make kind of like a brainstorm of what does this look like in the Word? To not be afraid and to walk in love and a sound mind. And what does that look like? You can create such a beautiful picture to begin to meditate on. And then as I meditate, I like to do that, whatever I'm doing. So taking that scripture and putting it a place where I am often, maybe sticking it on my computer screen so that I can repeat it, or above my desk at work so that I can repeat it every time I stand up or go to the bathroom or get a drink or whatever it might be. And then just continuing to say it as I'm working, as I'm going through my day, just keeping that word always, always on your lips, always in your mind. That is something that from the beginning to the end, the Lord calls us to remember to meditate on the Word, to always have these words on your lips. And so it's just such a beautiful thing that invites the Lord into everything you're doing. And like I said, put it somewhere that you can see it. Put it somewhere where you're going to run into it. Make it something that you bump into from the time you get up in the morning until you go to bed. Sticky notes, three by five cards. Put it on your phone, your lock screen, whatever that might be. So that's something I've actually done is a screenshot of my Bible app with the verse on it and I stick it on my lock screen. So every time I pick up my phone, I read the verse before I open it. It. That's it. It's not complicated, but it's a trigger, a reminder to get that word into my heart because it's something that God wants to work on with me. And then we want to capture those old thoughts, we want to take every thought captive and we're going to make it obedient to the mind of Christ. What is the mind of Christ? Ah, guess what? It's the Word. And so we're going to grab those old thoughts and maybe you're battling fear. And so every time that fear, you start to fear, feel that fear bubbling up, you grab that and you say, nope, I' not partnering with you. Fear, you have to leave. This is what the Word says. And then you're fighting with that word. And so that's what the Word was made for. I love how Wendy Backlin says the the Word is a sword, and if you haven't killed something with it lately, you're probably not doing it right. And so we want to get those negative thoughts, those lies from the enemy and we want to cast them out. We want to kill them with the Word. [00:20:47] Speaker A: So as, as you're doing your daily devotions, you're reading the Bible, it's really easy to, to pull it out, read your chapter, you close it, boom. Checked it off my list. I'm a good Christian today. Don't do that. We're going to stop, we're going to pause. We're not just going to go, okay, what, what did I read today? We're going to actually ask the Holy Spirit, okay, what did I read today? How do I apply this to my life right now? What is the truth that you're showing me for my circumstance, my situation right now? God's Word is that powerful that as we read it, it these words that were written thousands of years ago, they're alive today. And he will show up and go, okay, look, this is actually how I want you to apply this today. And then guess what? Do it. [00:21:30] Speaker C: We're [00:21:30] Speaker A: going to partner with the Holy Spirit and we're going to act on what he has asked us to do, what he's showing us in the Word. And sometimes it's maybe not as practical as something I'm going to do today, but something I'm going to think. It's something I'm going to meditate on. It's something I'm going to focus my life on. The more we pay attention to that, the more it's going to transform us. Whatever we pay attention to increases in our lives. So if I'm paying attention to whatever it is, the fear, the anxiety, the bad relationship, the anger, whatever that thing is that's bugging us, the more we focus on that, the more that's going to increase. The more we're going to have that reflected in our lives. The more we focus on the truth of God's word, those other things start to diminish and they start to go away. And what do you know? The truth becomes, oh, that is what I'm focusing. Focused on. It doesn't. Your circumstance might not change right away, but your attitude, your beliefs about it, your actions, those are gonna start to line up with God's word. And that is so, so powerful to bring about that lasting change that we also desperately want. [00:22:34] Speaker C: Yeah. So let's make this even more practical. I feel like we've given lots of practical tips today, but let's give you some action steps. So the first thing is to identify an area where you feel stuck. And this might be really obvious to you. You might be like, I already know this. I been fighting in this area. I've really been wanting some breakthrough here. Or maybe it's something a little bit less obvious. But if you look at the fruit of the different areas in your life, is there maybe an area where you're not as joyful, hopeful, kind, patient, loving, all the fruit of the spirit? If the fruit of the spirit's not there, then that's a really good area to start as well. So choose one area where you feel stuck. And here's the thing, you don't. We're not trying to overhaul your whole life today. That is a bad. That is a more difficult path to choose to try to change everything. But what is one thing that you can begin to partner with the truth for? So what is one area, one belief where you can begin to say, okay, I know this isn't lining up because I feel hopeless or I feel really sad or doubtful when I think about this area. Okay, pick that area and then begin to ask, what am I believing? What am I believing? That is causing me to feel hopeless, fearful, uncertain, whatever it might be. And don't just sit with yourself. You can probably sit with yourself and ask this question and you might find some things out. But when we ask the Holy Spirit, when we partner with him in this process, that makes all the difference. So we love to say, holy Spirit, what is a lion believing in this area that you want to talk to me about today? And just allow him, whatever comes up, allow him to lead you. So maybe it's something you feel like you have a feeling, you have a thought, a picture, a quick picture that runs through your mind. Or maybe you just know as soon as you begin to ask a question, something automatically comes up. Go with that and then you can begin to work in that area. [00:24:40] Speaker A: Yeah, and then we're going to find one truth to apply to that area. And so I like to just ask God, what's a scripture that speaks to what I'm experiencing, this area of hopelessness or where I feel stuck. God, what is the truth that you want to show to me what's a scripture? And start reading through the scriptures. Follow him. Maybe something will pop into your mind or maybe sometimes there's a little hint of a verse that you've heard or used to know. You can, you can look that up online and there's no shame in like going and consulting, you know, searching the scripture. God has given us all these tools. You can use those. Find that scripture, the one that is highlighted to you that really it has life on it, has the breath of God just breathing on it. And then get that scripture. Hold onto it. We're going to make it personal. Put yourself in that verse just like we talked about. Turn it into a prayer declaration so you can pray it whenever those feelings come back up or that situation happens or your whatever it is, you just feel hopeless again. Turn it into your prayer and just pray that over and over. Turn it into a declaration. Say God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and a sound mind. That can be your declaration whenever the fear pops up. [00:26:01] Speaker C: And maybe you are new to hearing God's voice. Maybe this is something that feels really foreign to you. Or maybe you're a brand new Christian and you don't know a bunch of scriptures that to just draw from. And God can 100% still speak scriptures to you, so absolutely know that. But if, if you begin this process and you're like, I'm not hearing anything, that's okay. Start with the area that you feel stuck. Maybe it's your Finances. Maybe it's your relationships, maybe it's, you know, your home life. Go literally go online and sit down, type Bible versus About, and then put your problem in. And you will find articles. You will find the little AI at the top that gives you verses. Make sure you look them up to verify that they're correct. But you will find so many resources. It's so easy nowadays to find these things. Back when we were kids, teenagers, even young adults, I think we would have to go find a concordance and like flip through and find all the. So today you can literally do it on your phone. We can just ask for Bible scriptures about the area where you feel stuck, and then read through them and allow the Holy Spirit to highlight one to you. And all that means. It doesn't mean it's gonna like show up highlighted on the screen, which is what I used to think that it would happen. But what is going to. What it means is it's gonna pop off the page. You're gonna be like, oh, like, that's me, or that's what I need. You'll just notice it. And so if that's the case, that's okay too. This works too, because it's the Word always works. The Bible says that God does not speak a word that will return void. His Word will not return void. And that means that it always works. It's always going to do the thing that it set out to do. And so for you, that means that whatever that verse is that that pops out at you, it can do the work in your life if you will let it, if you will grab hold of it, appropriate it, and begin to pray it and make it personal and begin to declare it over life. It will do the work. It will begin to uproot those weeds and the lies that have lived in these places as you partner with it. So that's the third step, is to partner with the truth every single day. Pray it, say it out loud, put it where you'll see it, and always come back to it whenever those old patterns pop up. Come back to the Word because the Word is life. [00:28:30] Speaker A: Yeah. So how. How do we partner with the Word? We're going to pray it, we're going to say it out loud. We're going to put it all around. Our house. You should see our house has sticky notes everywhere with scriptures with truth on them so that we run into them regularly. Put them on your bathroom mirror. Say them after you brush your teeth. Make it part of your routine so that you're bumping into the scriptures the truth of God's word all the time. I love that idea of putting it on your phone, on the lock screen. That is incredible. Write it out. I love to write. That really helps me. I love to just go through the process and write my scriptures out. Okay, These are my scriptures. I'm writing them. I'm getting them inside of me as I'm writing them. I'm meditating on them. I'm asking the Lord, what do you want to show me? Is there something new about this scripture that you want to reveal to me today? And just allow him to speak to you and write it all down. And then whatever those old thoughts come up or the old emotion, the feeling, whenever it just kind of pops back up, we're gonna say, nope, I'm not agreeing with that. I actually renounce that old way of thinking, this is the truth. And say your scripture, pray your scripture, meditate on your scripture, spend time in it, just love it and make it part of you. And then just continue asking the Holy Spirit day by day, what would this believing, this truth look like today for me? Make it personal and allow him to speak that into you. And guess what? God is going to speak to you in so many incredible ways. You're going to be driving and see a license plate frame or a billboard or a movie is going to pop on or a song on the radio or on your Spotify is going to show up and you're going to go, oh, that's the Lord speaking. Because your brain is attuned to that. But you're paying attention. The Holy Spirit is working powerfully in your life to make this truth come alive so that you can be transformed by it. Truly transformed from the inside. [00:30:23] Speaker C: Yeah. The reality is you. You might not need another sermon or a book or another Bible study before you can really change. You might just need to take the truth. God has already spoken to you, the verse that he's already promised you, the. The sermon that you already heard that thing and begin to apply it, to appropriate it, take hold of it and make it part of who you are. Because when the truth moves from your head to your heart and you begin to believe it and. And live out of it, that's when transformation really begins. So I hope that you'll join us for Transformed by Truth in 30 days. It's going to be so powerful to renew your mind and to help you partner with the truth that God has for your life. So hope to see you there. [00:31:08] Speaker A: And right now I just sense God's grace coming upon you to hear his voice to read His Word with fresh eyes, that it's going to come alive like never before. Maybe you felt discouraged like I read the Bible, but. But I don't understand it or doesn't speak to me or doesn't change me. I don't understand why people get so excited about the Word or why I'm supposed to read it so much. It feels like a chore. God is removing all of that. He's breathing fresh life onto His Word to make it come alive for you and to make it personal for you today, what you need to hear. And the Holy Spirit is coming to help you apply it to your life as you hear his voice, to apply it every single day of your life so that you really can be transformed. You can be different. You can be the person that you know God created you to be. You have that deep down inside of you, you know. You know that the truth is supposed to change you, and it's going to set you free. I mean, he's doing that process, and he's going to help you in that process. All you got to do is say, yes, I agree with you, Lord. I'm going to follow you and I'm going to do what you're putting on my heart today so that I can be changed. And he's actually going to make it easy for you. He's going to help you along the way. The Holy Spirit is the best helper we could ever ask for, and he's really, really good at his job. So we just bless you with that. Receive his grace today to be transformed and to apply that word to your life in Jesus name. [00:32:46] Speaker C: Hey, friends. And we hope you enjoyed today's episode.
