[00:01:56] Josh: A few months ago, we were out on a date night and I was just feeling really stressed. I think I was worrying about money and we'd had a good evening together. We were actually, we like to go to Safeway and try to buy the little. The chocolate cake slices.
[00:02:13] Corina: Colossal chocolate cake slice. They're so good.
[00:02:15] Josh: So we were on a mission to find a colossal chocolate cake slice.
And I don't, I think. Did we find one that night?
[00:02:22] Corina: I think so.
[00:02:22] Josh: I think so. But it was stressing about money and I said, Corina we just. Will you worry positive with me? And worrying positive is a trick that we've learned to break the power of stress to Break the power of worry and anxiety.
And so what it does kind of puts it. Flips it on its head. I said, babe, I'm worried about money. Let's just do some worrying positive. And so we take turns just saying things that we're worried that could go so incredibly right for us that it would be amazing. Like, that's what God has for us. And so I was like, oh, I'm just really worried we're going to have so much money that we won't know how we're going to give it away. There's going to be so many different things that we want to people we want to bless, and it's going to be really hard to decide who's going to get all that money.
[00:03:11] Corina: I'm worried that we'll give all of our money away and we'll still have so much, we won't know what to do with it.
[00:03:20] Josh: Right. And so we just take turns kind of laughing and it gets.
It's pretty fun. And so next thing you know, you laugh so much and you've really thought about the incredible possibilities of what God wants to do in your life. And it just breaks the power of that worry.
And actually you're partnering with what. What God's doing in you. And that laughter is just really good medicine for your soul. It helps you break. It breaks that power of those thoughts that have been circling in your mind. And so that's just one little example of how we've put into practice some of these principles that we're going to teach you today.
[00:04:01] Corina: Yeah.
I would also like to point out that the Bible says that eye has not seen and ear has not heard, nor has even entered the mind what God has in store for those who love him. And so you can rest assured that you will never think of something, you'll never worry positively something that God hasn't already thought of or can't do. Like, that's the cool part about it, is that no matter what we come up with, God is like a million times better.
And I don't know about you, but I've had so many times in my life where God has exceeded my expectations, where I held onto something because I was so worried what would happen if I let it go or if I let God take control of that area.
And he blew my mind with the way that he actually came in and saved the day when I finally surrendered. So just know that this is. This is one example of something that, that we use and that we hope you'll. You'll take on. But you can't.
You just can't even. You can't out imagine God. He is beyond His. His ways are higher, His. His thoughts are greater and he wants to blow you away. So I just wanted to throw that out there. But we want to talk about two passages today. One, Thessalonians 5, 16 through 18 and Philippians 4, 4, 7. Because we really see these passages as a pres.
A prescription for peace and happiness for your life. And so first Thessalonians 5, 16, 18 says, Rejoice always. Pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. It's so simple, but it's so powerful.
And then Philippians 4, 4, 7 says, Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again.
Rejoice. Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything. But in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
I can tell you that I've known these verses for many, many years. I struggled with fear a lot growing up. So Philippians 6 and 7 was like a life verse for me that something that I held onto. But I never really saw this prescription for peace in these verse until recently. And so we want to break that down for you today.
[00:06:29] Josh: Yeah, I love how these two scriptures are kind of parallel. They have the same formula that just to release God's power in your life. It's pretty simple. We're going to rejoice, we're going to pray, we're going to give thanks.
And those things are easy. So the first one is to rejoice. And that just means we're going to activate joy again and again and again. Revolution. Re. I'm rejoicing. I'm rejoing every single time. So when things feel heavy, or even if they don't, if things feel great, rejoice in that too. But any, we can be joyful all the time, even when things are really hard. That's actually one of the most powerful tools that God has given us is just to be joyful. And that breaks that cycle. Just like when we're sitting in the parking lot, I'm feeling stressed and bummed out, we start laughing. Next thing you know, we feel great things. You realize, oh, things are not nearly as bad as I thought they were because God's with us. God is taking care of us. God is just showing up in every situation, get excited about what God is doing that is so, so powerful.
[00:07:36] Corina: And I love that. Re. Re.
[00:07:37] Josh: Re.
[00:07:38] Corina: I'm rejoicing. I'm doing it again. I'm doing it again. And you know, Paul even says, rejoice in the Lord always. I'll say it again. Rejoice, like he's reminding you, this is important. And I love that first Thessalonians passage, says always, continually, in all circumstances. This isn't just for sometimes or just for when you're feeling bad. This is for always, continually, and in all circumstances. So whatever you're facing today, whether it's good, bad in between, whether it's horrible or amazing, whether it's your wedding day or you just buried a loved one, this is the moment to rejoice in the Lord, to pray continually and to give thanks in all circumstances.
So rejoicing actually creates a physical response in your body. There are chemicals that are released when you rejoice. And Healthline actually says that physical rejoicing, like laughing, smiling, or just moving your body with joy, dramatically improves mental health by triggering an immediate, immediate biochemical cascade in the brain. It lowers stress hormones while releasing the natural feel good chemicals that ease anxiety, build emotional resilience, and help break negative thought loops. I mean, who doesn't want those things?
[00:08:54] Josh: That sounds great.
[00:08:56] Corina: I just want all those. All those things all the time, right? When we rejoice, we're breaking those negative spirals that we get stuck in. When we rejoice, we're releasing oxytocin and serotonin and all of the amazing chemicals that God put in our brain to bring healing and health to our mental state, but also to our bodies. And so I just love when science catches up to the Bible and God is like, I've been showing you this all along. It's it right there in my word. When you rejoice, you're bringing health to your body. And we see that in Nehemiah 8, 10. The joy of the Lord is your strength. Proverbs tells us, a merry heart is good medicine. And so we can see throughout the Word that the Lord is telling us over and over, this is how you have a happy and healthy life, is through joy.
[00:09:45] Josh: Okay, so we're gonna rejoice, and then we're gonna pray. We're gonna pray continually. And that's just conversation with God. Sometimes I think we over complicate it, make it hard. Oh, I, you know, I don't. I gotta get to this really special spot and I gotta, you know, block everything out and try to focus on. No, it's just a conversation with the Lord. Obviously, we want to do that where we give God our full, undivided attention, but we can just invite him into a conversation through every part of our day. We're just talking to him. And I mean, it's just like your best friend is with you there all the time. You can talk all the time with God. And prayer is so, so powerful. Again, science is catching up to the Bible. We love that.
And we actually have a quote here. Prayer measurably alters brain function and chemistry. Regular, contemporative or relational prayer lowers stress hormone levels, decreases anxiety, and fosters emotional resilience by activating the brain's frontal lobe and calming its fear centers. Isn't that incredible?
[00:10:52] Corina: Powerful?
[00:10:53] Josh: Prayer is a powerful, powerful tool.
[00:10:55] Corina: Yeah. And this idea of prayer, just like Josh said, it's not complicated. I've encountered different people that will say, well, I don't pray like anybody else, or I don't know how to pray. I would never pray in public. That's not what we're asking you to do. That's not what God's asking you to do. And it's okay if you don't pray like anybody else because we're all unique and special and we all have our own way of communicating with the Lord. But when you pray, you're actually calming your mind and you are calming those fear centers. That is so huge.
And so we want to just engage in conversation with the Lord. That's all it is. And like Paul says, pray continually, all the time. So that doesn't mean you have to be a monk in a monastery in complete and total silence. It doesn't mean you have to have a special prayer closet. Those are great things. But most of us live lives that move. You have children, you have a job, you have ministry. You have things that you're doing. Pray continually. Whatever you're doing, you're going to bring peace into that situation. You're going to encounter God's presence. He's going to come along with you. I often, when I'm driving, I often like to just imagine Jesus riding along with me, and he's like, hey, let's go. What are we doing today? You know, And I just talk to him when I'm in the car, and usually by myself when I'm in the car by myself. But we can, we can take him with us all day long. He's already with you. You might as well talk to him. And so just allowing that prayer to lower those stress hormones, man, that is so powerful. It's like God knew what he was doing when he made us.
[00:12:35] Josh: Yeah. And doctor, God gave us his prescription for how to, how to conquer fear and to really live in peace and to live in joy. It's pretty simple steps. And it's the things that if you look up how I'm stressed, how do I deal with it? It's all the things that science, like medicine, is recommending to us. God put it in his word thousands of years ago for us because he knew that we would need that. And we know that the number one command in the Bible from Jesus, fear not. I'm with you. You don't have to be afraid. And so these. We're going to rejoice, we're going to pray, and the last step is to give thanks. We've got a couple different episodes. You can go back and find about the power of gratitude, but we're going to talk about it a little bit today as well, because it is so powerful. Again, science has said that gratitude is really powerful. The Harvard Health Online says gratitude seemed to help protect participants from every cause of death studied, including cardiovascular disease. Gratitude, wow. It affects our physical bodies and actually makes us healthier. Isn't that incredible?
[00:13:41] Corina: Yeah. This article on Harvard Health was really interesting because it, they were kind of like, we all know gratitude has health benefits. Like, it's just been proven over and over and over. But what they were reviewing was this, the Nurses Health Study, which is fairly famous by now. If you've ever looked into longevity or anything like that, you've read about it, and they went back and they looked at what happens when the people studied started with gratitude, if they were just naturally grateful people to begin with, and how that affected the outcome of the study or on their lives. And the people who were most grateful were protected from almost every cause of disease and their lifespan was increased by about 9%, which is crazy. Just because they were grateful, just because they said thank you. Like, I was blown away when I saw that Thanksgiving. Gratitude does so many things, just like prayer, just like rejoicing, it releases those positive chemicals. It. It calms the fears, it quiets the noise. But I love, what I love most about gratitude is that it kind of takes over.
So when you're, when you truly bring yourself to that place of recognizing the good things in your life and, and stepping into gratitude, your brain actually stops working on everything else. Like, it stops working on the problems. It stops thinking about the scary things and the fearful things, and it actually just focuses on the gratitude. I mean, it's amazing. That I just feel like, why didn't anybody tell us this sooner? But God has been telling it to us from the beginning. Rejoice, pray and give thanks. Always, continually, in all circumstances. This is his prescription. Doctor, God to the rescue. You want peace? You want happiness? You want a longer life? Oh my gosh, give thanks. It's so powerful.
I'm just blown away. I'm always blown away when God reveals something new through scripture. But it's really cool to see how science just comes in and goes, oh yeah, totally. We just proved the Bible true again. It's amazing.
[00:16:01] Josh: Do you ever remember when you were a kid and your mom used to make you write thank you notes for all the gifts for your birthday and you're like, oh, this.
[00:16:10] Corina: Thank you for the blah, blah, blah.
[00:16:12] Josh: Your mom was right. She knew what she was talking about.
She said, be grateful.
Actually that can improve your life, your lifespan and the quality of your life. So how do we put these into practice? We want to get practical and give you some tips for you to actually put this into practice in your life every single day. How do we rejoice? Well, we're going to celebrate based on God's faithfulness and his ability to do the impossible.
Sometimes when it feels, even when it feels really dark, I just like to get to a point where I go, God, woo hoo. I don't know what you're doing. I don't know how you're gonna work this out, but I know that you're gonna do it because you're a good father. And to celebrate in advance of the breakthrough and just like sitting in the parking lot worrying positive, we didn't have the breakthrough in the finances yet, but we're getting excited about what God is going to do. And it puts us in a different place frame of mind where we're thinking about the possibilities instead of focusing on the impossible.
[00:17:17] Corina: And the laughter really helps. And so those are kind of our steps here for rejoicing is to celebrate what God is doing and what he has done. Even in those moments when you feel like you're in an impossible situation or you're in a really hard place, God is doing something. And so begin to celebrate what you can see him doing, but also what you can't see him doing, he's always at work, he's always working behind the scenes. And so celebrating him and worrying positively is such a powerful tool. But then the laughter is really so important because in order to laugh you have to let go of something. I mean, think about the last time you Were, like, in an argument or a fight and someone tried to make you laugh, and you're like, I will not laugh. I am staying mad no matter how funny it is. Right? You have to let go of being mad if you're going to join the laughter. And this is kind of that same idea. You have to let go of the fear if you're going to laugh and rejoice in the Lord. You have to let go of the anxiety if you're going to say, yes, God, I trust you and your faithfulness. And so we rejoice based on what God has done, but also the fact that we know he can do the impossible.
So delight yourself in the Lord, and you're going to see the desires of your heart fulfilled. You're going to see the breakthrough that he's already been preparing for you. And there's so many amazing stories in the Bible about this. I think of Daniel when he had been praying for 21 days, fasting and praying, and then the angel appears to him and says, I was released as soon as you started praying, but I've been fighting my way here. And it took 21 days. But he didn't give up. He continued to press in for the breakthrough that was coming. And it was on the way. God was already at work. And I think about Elisha and his servant when they're being attacked by basically an army, this one man, the army's coming for him, and the servant is kind of freaking out. And Elisha just prays God open his eyes because there's more force than against us. And then he sees the armies of the Lord surrounding them. So whatever you're facing, know that God has already released the answers and that you can be celebrating God. Thank you. Oh, I'm so excited because I know that provision is on the way. I know that help is on the way. I know that the heavenly armies are on the way to do the thing that yout have promised. And so you can rejoice in that.
[00:19:36] Josh: Yeah, yeah. That's so good that rejoicing is such a powerful tool. Get excited. Jump up and down, put on some exciting, fun worship music and get excited about what God's going to do. Throw a party, like, celebrate. Have, you know, bake a cake, whatever it is. Like, let's get excited. Let's be excited about what God is doing because it's such a powerful tool.
And God just. He shows up when we rejoice. When we get excited, he shows up. And it's something that we have to do intentionally.
It doesn't we just. It's never a convenient season to be joyful and even just start with fake laughter. Fake laughter still counts. It's still laughter.
[00:20:15] Corina: And it often leads to real laughter.
[00:20:16] Josh: Yeah, and it does. But there's even been studies. Fake laughter works just as good as real laughter. So even if it doesn't feel authentic in the moment, just start making yourself laugh. Find excuses to laugh, get some funny videos to watch or whatever it is that makes you laugh. And it is such a. Such a powerful tool to just move into peace, to move out of worry and anxiety into the joy that God has for you.
So the next step is to pray.
And we love to practice listening prayer. So a lot of times we have a tendency to do all the talking. I do all the. A lot of times I do all the talking when I'm praying. But I've learned that we need to let God speak, too. It's a conversation, and we want to listen to him. We want to know what he is saying to us. So a tool that's been really helpful for me is to just practice listening prayer. And there's just really two steps to it. And hopefully this helps you out.
Number one is, yeah, we're going to talk. We're going to tell God our truth. Tell God your truth. God, this is what I'm experiencing. This is how I feel about it. Get those things off of your chest. Because just like sometimes you sit down with a friend and you're venting a little bit, and then you feel better afterwards.
God's okay, if we need to vent to him. Say, oh, that was really frustrating. Or, God, I'm really scared. I don't know what to do. Tell him what your truth is. But then, and this is where the powerful step comes in. We're going to go, God, what do you want me to know about this?
Sometimes we ask the wrong questions. God, why did that happen?
Or, you know, how can I fix this? How do I fix this? Or we're trying to overcomplicate it.
Don't ask those kinds of questions. All we have to do is ask God, what do you want to know? Because he knows what we can handle. He knows exactly what we need to hear in the moment.
And as I have practiced this, it has been so, so powerful to break strongholds in my thinking, to break the power of worry and anxiety and to move into peace. Because, God, what do you know? He always knows the right thing to say. He always knows exactly what I need to hear. And so we just have to give him some space. To talk and then listen and write down what you hear. Write it in your journal. That's all it is. God, what.
What do you want me to know about this situation? What do you want me to know about this problem or this emotion that I'm feeling, this relationship? What do you want me to know? And then just write it down. And you know what? He always says something that really helps me out. It's wild.
And you have within you as a Christ follower, you hear his voice. So clearly I was raised not knowing if God even spoke to me. Let me solve that for you. He does. He wants to talk to you. He's the God that speaks. If you look, you read the whole Bible, God is always speaking. He was speaking to Abraham, he was speaking to Isaac, to Jacob, to Joshua, to Moses. I mean, the entire Bible. He's the God who speaks. He's not far away and hoping that, well, hope you figure it out on your own. No, he wants to speak into your situation. And you have an antenna that is tuned to God's voice. You're going to hear him. You're a good sheep and you hear his voice really well. Just give him the space to talk and don't try to figure it all out. Oh, was that my mind or is that God's voice speaking?
Just write down what you hear. And then afterwards, you can sit down with a friend that hears God's voice and go, oh, do you think this was right? Am I getting it right?
Yeah. It's a really, really powerful tool that has helped me so much. And it will help you too. Yeah.
[00:23:45] Corina: And remember, God's voice always lines up with Scripture, and it always lines up with his character. And I think that's when, even before you sit down with another person, you can bring it before the Word. What does the word of God say? Does this line up with the Word? Does this line up with what I know to be true about God?
But then also remember that his voice is kinder and wiser and gentler than our own voice. And so I feel like if I hear something and it's kinder, gentler, wiser, if there's information in there that I didn't know before, if there is grace in there that I didn't have before, that's probably God. So you can just trust that he is speaking to you.
And remember, he's never going to condemn you. He is not going to come down and say, I can't believe you did that, or, you're so stupid. God doesn't talk like that. He is Kind and gentle and loving. And so trust that you're hearing his voice. And remember that prayer is a conversation. And so even if you're not in a place where you can write down what he's saying, Josh likes to pray on his walks. And so he'll just record a voice memo in his phone. Wherever you are, you can have those kind of conversations with him. Maybe you have a long commute or you ride a train to work, or maybe you're just with your kids all day and the nearest thing you have is, you know, a Corina and a diaper. Just write it down. You know, it doesn't have to be this special place where I only can meet with God there. Remember, the scripture says, pray continually. And so whatever you're doing, you can have that conversation with Him. Be listening. And if you don't hear anything in the moment, be listening throughout your day as you continue on.
He might speak to you in an unexpected way through a friend or a song on the radio, through somebody's bumper sticker or license plate. He is always speaking. So just keep listening because he is so ready to communicate with you. So we rejoice, we jump up and down and we say, thank you, Jesus. And then we pray and we listen for his voice. And that third step is to give thanks. So recently I was on Instagram and I saw this post. I don't know if it's really comes from Warren Buffett, but this is the caption. Warren Buffett shares a simple mindset shift. And so I was like, oh, I love mindset shifts. Going to read this. And what it said was, look for things that are still going well even when something bad happens. And I'm like, okay, I can get on board with this, right? We want to train our gaze so that we're looking for the positive. So whenever a problem occurs, it said repeat three times. Thank God that. And then you fill in the blank. So it gave some examples like spilled coffee on your clothes. Thank God that I have another shirt. Thank God I didn't get burned. Thank God I have time to change. So you just take whatever has happened or is happening and then thank God for three things that are going right. Another example was got a flat tire. Thank God that I have a car. Thank God there's a spare tire. Oh, thank God that my phone is charged and I can call the tow truck, right? I can call somebody to come change my tire for me. And so what it said was that this is strengthening your emotional intelligence and training your mind to focus on the Positive. So whether or not it came from Warren Buffett, whether or not this is somebody else's strategy and they wanted to put somebody's name on it that people would recognize, I think it's so powerful and it's really true because you're training yourself to see the good in every situation, which I think a lot of us would go, of course I spill coffee on my shirt. I always spill coffee. I am such a clutch, right? Like, instead of going, like, thank God I have a spare shirt in my office, or I'm close enough to home to go change, or nobody cares if I spill food on me. Like, instead of going that direction, most of us go the opposite, right? Oh, I got a flat tire. Of course I got a flat. My husband didn't check it. And, you know, and we. We go through these, like, mental gymnastics of anger and frustration and anxiety and dumping on ourselves or others around us instead of looking for the positive. So if you can begin to kind of catch those negative thoughts at the beginning, you will train yourself to be emotionally resilient, to face hard things and come out shining and be being positive. I just thought it was a really great and practical way to just train your brain for Thanksgiving. Gratitude is so important, like we talked about. And so this is just one really easy way because I would say on most days, at least one kind of not the best thing is going to happen, right? It's just. It's just human nature. There are things that happen in our lives that we just didn't want to happen. And so instead of going down the negative rabbit hole, we get to go up with Jesus in thanksg.
[00:28:32] Josh: Well, this is really just training ourselves to think like God. I mean, God is. He's always working things together for the good of those that love him and are called according to his purpose. It's in his word. He's working things out for our good. Does that mean that everything is always going to be rainbows and unicorns? No. I mean, for Corina yes. But for the rest of us, you know, there's going to be tough things that happen, but no, that God is working it out for your good. He's working them together. He's weaving this beautiful tapestry of your life. The good and the bad. It all works together for your good.
And so we're just training ourselves to think like God does, to see our lives the way God does. He is always doing stuff. And we get a choice to focus on what God's not doing or on the bad things or to focus on what he is doing. And guess what? If you focus on what he is doing, it changes you into to a different person. Think about the most positive person that you've ever met.
They're not that way on accident. Usually they had a parent or family that really focused, that trained them to think that way or somebody. A lot of times maybe if you talk to em, maybe they used to be a really pessimistic person, but they were intentional about changing the way that they thought.
And so being intentional to go, actually, I'm choosing to think a different way. You can go from pessimistic to being an optimistic. It is possible to change the way that you're wired. Even though it feels like, oh, that's just the way I am, I want it to be that way. No, that's actually the beauty of God's word and his wisdom as we apply it to our lives. We get to be different, we get to be changed, we get to grow to be more like Jesus. It's incredible.
[00:30:12] Corina: Yeah. And remember that God doesn't ever ask us to do something that we're not capable of doing.
[00:30:17] Josh: Right?
[00:30:18] Corina: So it might feel a little bit hard at first. It might feel like, I can't do this. I'm really bad at this. Or this feels fake. I don't like there's so many excuses that we could make. But if God gives us a command in scripture, there's a reason and he has given us the ability to do it. And so if he says to rejoice always, then we need to say, okay, God, show me how to do that. I feel like I can't rejoice ever. Not, not even just in one situation, but just ever. I feel like it's so hard to rejoice. Everything feels so heavy. Show me how to rejoice. Just begin to partner with him to do the thing that he's asked you to do. Because if he's told you, commanded you to do it, and it is a command, none of this is like, if you feel like it, or maybe sometimes you should try this. No. God says, rejoice always. Pray continually in every situation, in all circumstances, Give it thanks. Then. Then it's possible. And he wants to come alongside you to empower you to walk this out for your health, for your longevity, for your peace and your happiness. If you can learn to rejoice and to pray and give thanks all the time, I will say it again. Rejoice.
Then you can partner with Dr. God's prescription for a peaceful and happy life.
[00:31:33] Josh: You can do this. God is giving you grace his supernatural enabling power to work this out in your life. He is strengthening you to do it. Just ask him. God, help me to rejoice. Help me to pray continually. Help me to give thanks. And you know what? He's really good at sending help. He'll do it. So.
[00:31:51] Corina: So.
[00:31:51] Josh: We believe in you. We love you. Put this into practice. It will change your life.
